Value wise he sits inside the $3.5-4.0 range, compared to salaries around the league he sits in the $4.0-4.5 range.
I wouldn't include Volchenkov in that, he's marginally better then Staal but Lou managed to get him at a very reduced and fair price.

for 3.5-4 then i would agree that its an ok signing...anything above that is a waste of cap space
