How do you become a scout. Because before you become a GM you have to be a scout usaully if your not a NHL player.
Please give me a real answer, not you got to be in the NHL first. Just for an amatuer, how to become one?

First things first is you'd need to apply to junior teams and scout for them for a very long time. You probably have no idea how brutal a scouts life really is especially at that level. Always on the road watching random games. Do that for a decade then maybe, maybe if your good enough a college may hire you or maybe help run a junior program or even college program. You do not need to be a scout first in order to become a GM however; you do need to be incredibly good with numbers and usually have some kind of degree in Law. Most GM's are highly educated lawyers. Fact is, there's only 30 people on the planet who are NHL GM's...you'd have better odds of getting struck by lightning.

My great nephew is Assistant GM/scout for his hometown Jr A team and it consumes almost all of his time. I don't know if it's a road you really want to take, but if it is,you have to network. If you have a local Jr. A, or Jr.C team you can talk to them and see if they need your help and then you can make the right connections from there.

How do you get a job...being a scout is a job. You have to apply for a job and just like any high paying job you have to get experience. Apply to work for your local hockey team and work you way up.
But how would we know anyway other than the obvious. The reason we post on an internet website is because we dont have jobs in hockey...

So what degree do you need to be a GM how can you be a GM without going to be a scout

you have to work your way up somehow...everyone works their way up...it doesnt just happen. Burke is a lawyer. Chiarelli is a former agent and went to Harvard. You can get there in many ways, there isnt one way to do it.

One way of becoming a scout is just to know the right people. One of my buddys whos father is Paul MacLean (detroit redwings ast. coach) took a film editing course in t.dot.....and gotta job with pheonix as the video scout and after a couple years is now an amateur scout. This would be the easiest way at least haha
