Interesting..
Nick Mangold will sign a 7-year, $55 million deal later today, which will include as much as $24 million in guarantees to make him the highest paid center in the NFL.
But the more interesting point is exactly how -- and why -- the negotiations were resurrected.
Two weeks ago, there was no hope for an extension. None. Both sides were resigned to the idea that the uncertain labor landscape precluded a new deal until 2011. Mangold even told me at the time that it wasnt going to happen. Im not happy about it, but I accepted that fact, he said.
The Daily News has learned that everything changed about eight days ago when a new element was proposed that re-opened the previously tabled talks. Sources have told me that both sides share some risk in this new deal. Its unclear at this time which side proposed the new idea.
But both sides went into overdrive over the past week to lock up the All-Pro center. Perhaps the Jets were sending a message to disgruntled All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis, who is entering the 24th day of his holdout.
The team has signed two of their Core Four young nucleus in the past six weeks. All Pro left tackle DBrickashaw Ferguson signed a $6-year, $60 million extension last month.
Only Revis and linebacker David Harris remain.
Harris deal wont get done until after the season. The financial barriers due to the current CBA make it virtually impossible for Harris to get a new deal now. The Jets would essentially have to guarantee 95 percent of the total value of the contract for it to make sense. And that simply isnt happening.
